waiting forever

once upon a time, in a place far up north
fresh out of eighth grade
I found a place that taught me
what exactly it meant to love

and while my eyes feasted on aquamarine waters
and my feet treaded on ancient soils
my mind contemplated the meaning
of being completely and utterly lost

as I rested on old wooden fences
and watched my brothers try to swim away
I found myself tightening my grip on my phone
searing in the meaning of longing

love with its tattered wings
and shriveled concepts of right and wrong
slithered in and thrust upon a fragile psyche
the experience of waiting forever
